re: #526 BigPapa

My Brother In Law took off. We hadn’t had The Talk as an entire family. Wife Unit group texting him and Mom. This is No Bueno.

I realized the power of media. I’ve been repeating to my wife ‘whatever we may think is here or is official, multiply it by 20 to 50. But I just told her 41 is the Oahu number and she got all freaked out about that. I had to remind her of what I’ve been saying. Hawaii Island is 3. A FB friend’s brother in law has it in Oahu. Here we go.

Explain please..thx

My sister turned me on to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard from Australia. They play two drummers that frequently play the same notes in unison, and sometimes on guitar. Must make notes sound fatter and richer.

Strictest ‘stay-at-home’ measures not needed in Nebraska yet, officials say (Omaha World-Herald).

Meanwhile in the Panhandle where there are no cases but we are surrounded by states which have them, we are close to a shelter-in-place order.

With the exception of the three cases in North Platte and the couple in the southeast corner of the state, all the cases are in Mayor Stothert’s city or the suburbs around it.

Democrats block McConnell from holding Monday morning vote on coronavirus bill

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) blocked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) attempt to set up a Monday morning vote on the stimulus package, effectively delaying the vote until the afternoon.

McConnell had vowed earlier Sunday that he would force a second procedural vote related to the stimulus package at 9:45 a.m., 15 minutes after the markets open.

But when McConnell tried to lock in that time, Schumer objected, denying the GOP leader the consent he needed to enact his plan.

Instead, the Senate will vote for a second time after they come into session at noon on Monday.

The US Chamber of Commerce and several CEOs oppose using the Defense Production Act, saying it will tie their hands with red tape as they deal with the coronavirus epidemic (translation: they need time to figure out how to profiteer from a disaster).

However, the New York Times chose to write a headline about that which reads Trump Bets Business Will Answer Call to Fight Virus, but Strategy Bewilders Firms (Maggie Haberman, Trump’s PR woman at the Tmes shares a byline with two others on the article).

Rear Adm. John Polowczyk has been plucked from the staff of the Joint Chiefs, where he is a senior officer for military logistics, to run the effort to build a supply chain. And Peter Navarro, the White House trade adviser, is also playing a leading role. The government has essentially thrown out its existing playbook for dealing with pandemics, seizing the issue from the Department of Health and Human Services and moving it to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

We’re doomed.

You have to get to paragraph twenty-one of the article for this:

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the heads of major corporations have lobbied the administration against using the act. They say the move could prove counterproductive, imposing red tape on companies precisely when they need flexibility to deal with closed borders and shuttered factories.

We realize the impact store closures will have on our associates and assure you the well-being of every employee is a top priority. We want to take care of them in the best way we can and will be providing applicable pay and benefits for this period.

All of the companies I have received closing emails from so far have said something about taking care of the employees, at least for a couple of weeks.

From John Cole:

I mentioned this earlier on the twitter, but I guess I never really internalized how much being in isolation would drive extroverts crazy. I have a ton of friends who are just losing it, and it has only been a week. People I know arehaving virtual happy hour on zoom, playing board games on facetime, one couple decided to up and paint their house. I know how miserable they are, because it’s the same way I feel in crowds, but at least I can leave.

So it’s super cool that all the museums and symphonies are doing what the other front pagers have posted. And remember, you are allowed outside. You just can’t be near people. Talk to people while sitting on your porch, chat with people out your window, etc. Just don’t get in coughing distance.

Monument Mall in Scottsbluff has shortened their hours by two each day for the epidemic. They say they are monitoring local health departments for further guidance. They also say stores within the mall may have different hours due to company policies and restaurants have “different operating conditions” (read the state closed seating areas) so call ahead.

monumentmall.com

That mall was one of the many failing malls in the USA when we moved here. Most of its anchor stores were closed.

An out-of-state developer bought the mall, did massive renovations, paid the city of Scottsbluff to renovate streets and US-26 around the mall, then reopened it with much fanfare. It has had over 95% rental occupancy since it reopened.

Okay, I understand.

Our lines from CenturyLink are on poles. Generally we don’t have any trouble with our telephone service, aside from our regular loss of Internet service.

The only time we lost telephone service (except when a tornado took out our telephone and electric lines) was a couple weeks ago. We curiously lost long-distance service and Internet service but not local service.

My neighbour lost her telephone service last year because the connexion to her house went bad. I called on her behalf to CenturyLink, and they make it very difficult to report another line not yours (menu after menu after clerk after escalate to supervisor to escalate to another supervisor to about an hour and a half on the telephone, promising I would pay if they sent someone way out here and there was nothing wrong with her service).

CenturyLink plugs calling by cell phone if you lose your Internet service. It’s a very long advert you have to listen to before you get to the “press or dial these options” menu.

It doesn’t matter how many times I complain about “we have no cell service, can you offer a skip option for that.”

Reading the last thread I am starting to wonder about the breadth of infection in the Senate and other upper echelons of government. If we don’t get a quick handle on the virus we will have lots of holes to fill soon. And as GDFrank pointed out, a loss of quorum at a minimum. Beyond the serious concerns of a Trump power grab we have a problem of basic continuance of a functioning government.
Have not heard much about Iran lately. Their government was rife with virus. Not sure how that is playing out.

My understanding is that Cuba does this fairly often, charges the helped country top rates for them, then pays the doctors their normal peanuts wages, and pockets the difference.

That is what Trump wants to put an end to…

Russia is a ticking time bomb. I heard that Putin dispatched a team of doctors to Italy.

I think that is a mixture of humanitarian gesture and self-interest: these people need to pick up some tips on how to cope with the health catastrophe that Russia is going to be facing in a few more weeks.

I don’t doubt that. Cuba reportedly has few cases so far. I suspect this move is so Cuban doctors can learn from this field work, for when they will be needed back home, and will already be “over it” by then.

The markets are going to just love hearing that the already insufficient actions to contain covid19 are already being undermined by Trump and the GOPers insistent on ignoring public health experts.

Cases keep rising exponentially. Deaths are rising too. And Trump thinks this is just going to go away with the weather even as fucknuts in states where GOPers control state government are dragging their feet on basic health safety protocols, because American exceptionalism.

When this is over, we’ll surpass everywhere else in the body count and those sickened.

Everyone has seen messages telling you we must “act today or people will die,” COVID-19 is basically just the flu, and/or that “flattening the curve is a deadly delusion.” These often have numbers, charts, citations, retroactively edited titles (“taksies backsies”), and data “science.”

Unfortunately, all of the above are signs of DKE-19, a highly contagious illness threatening the response against COVID-19. We must act today to flatten the curve of armchair epidemiology, or we will all be in peril.

Dunning-Kruger Effect (DKE) is a phenomenon where people lack the ability to understand their lack of ability. While strains of DKE typically circulate seasonally, a new and more virulent strain called DKE-19 is now reaching pandemic proportions.

“Strict” self isolation.

I did the supermarket thing yesterday and far too many people weren’t keeping 6 feet apart. And we have a common park, and there’s way too much interaction within that 6 feet spacing. We see it also every day with video/photos from NYC itself, parks, streets, etc.

And that’s worrisome, especially as there are localities and states that aren’t even bothering with these steps.

In my sport, disc golf, there is a now-rarely-used-but-once-hated 2-meter rule giving a penalty stroke to anyone whose disc lands more than 2 meters up in a tree.

We have now informally instituted the Horizontal 2-Meter Rule, and are encouraging people to carry 2-meter sticks (or walking sticks or umbrellas) and use them to encourage spacing. If someone moves inside 2 meters it is a penalty, same for touching anyone else’s disc or gear.

the grocery stores I went to yesterday in Maryland were mostly empty, which was surprising. They were more crowded last week.

There is a 10 person maximum that has been ordered by our governor. Barnes and Noble books store was only allowing that many people in the store but the grocery stores didn’t seem to be restricting the number of shoppers. Although again there weren’t many people in the parking lots or stores to begin with.

the grocery stores I went to yesterday in Maryland were mostly empty, which was surprising.

The companies that ship new stock to stores are still shipping their normal amounts, which would be enough to restock normally purchased amounts, but not the panic buying we’ve seen.

some shelves were empty, frozen veges aisle also depleted. The organic market I go to didn’t have the usual stock of chicken and ground beef. They said they have not been receiving all that they order, and that they don’t know how much they will get in a particular shipment.

from politicalwire.com this AM

Science Magazine’s Jon Cohen has a fascinating interview with Dr. Anthony Fauci on the coronavirus pandemic:

COHEN: What about the travel restrictions? President Trump keeps saying that the travel ban for China, which began 2 February, had a big impact and that he wishes China would have told us three to four months earlier and that they were “very secretive.” It just doesn’t comport with facts.

FAUCI: I know, but what do you want me to do? I mean, seriously Jon, let’s get real, what do you want me to do?

COHEN: Most everyone thinks that you’re doing a remarkable job, but you’re standing there as the representative of truth and facts but things are being said that aren’t true and aren’t factual.

FAUCI: The way it happened is that after he made that statement, I told the appropriate people, it doesn’t comport, because two or three months earlier would have been September. The next time they sit down with him and talk about what he’s going to say, they will say, by the way, Mr. President, be careful about this and don’t say that. But I can’t jump in front of the microphone and push him down. OK, he said it. Let’s try and get it corrected for the next time.

COHEN: You have not said China virus.

FAUCI: Ever.

COHEN. And you never will, will you?

FAUCI: No.

I think 2000k would actually be 2 million people, so probably just 2000. Things aren’t quite THAT bad yet.

Gamestop is finally closing all of their stores:

GameStop will close all of its storefronts starting Sunday following outcry from employees and calls from lawmakers to stay at home as coronavirus spreads in the United States.

Though stores will be closed to customers, GameStop will process orders on a digital only basis, moving to curbside pick-up at stores and delivery.

“This is an unprecedented time and each day brings new information about the COVID-19 pandemic. Our priority has been and continues to be on the well-being of our employees, customers and business partners. We have been steadfast in our adherence to CDC-guided safety and local government orders for retailers in each of our communities,” George Sherman, GameStop’s Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement.

Seeing as how school’s out for the foreseeable future here in Czech Republic, Ceska Televize has launched UčíTelka, TV-based learning for the kids.

From Monday, March 16, Czech Television is launching a unique program called UčíTelka . Every day, first grade elementary school students wait for a TV screen on the ČT2 network.

Cool idea - hopefully, it’ll work well. An emergency measure, and to Czech Television’s great credit, they got it up and running in a matter of 10 days. They’re planning on expanding it to older students soon.

They’re lying their asses off, because most places have yet to see cases overwhelm them (thinking that this is the worst of it).

We aren’t anywhere near the worst anywhere in the US because we haven’t even seen a peak. Cases continue doubling every 2-3 days. Deaths are growing and there’s no sign of a slowdown anywhere.

It’s all misinformation, and the early end to any of these measures will result in a wider spread.

Thanks for the update on Wegman’s. I figured it would worked over. For right now I am stuck in the “great” Northeast Philly. My street which would be empty this time of day is packed full of cars. As of 8 AM all Philadelphians are to stay at home unless they are getting supplies or helping someone.

I was in a local (Malvern) Wegmans late last week. No paper products, frozen entrees, frozen chicken, and controlled stocks (limit 2 per customer) of everything else for the most part. They had produce, but not as much as I usually see. On-site bakery products all bagged.

Check-out slow since they wiped down the check-out area between customers and enforced line spacing.

Apartment parking lot here pretty much full at a time of day that it is usually almost empty.

Exactly the same here. I asked one of my students, who bought 5 kilos of flour, why and she replied, “I will NOT run out of bread!” To be fair, some of that she bought for her grandmother, who’s staying at home.

Which reminds me, I found an interesting Fry Bread recipe for my Air Fryer. I should get a bag of flour this week and try it.

My brother’s anecdote for grocery shopping last Friday was that he visited three locations (western NY):
1. Wegman’s - pretty worked over and out of certain items.
2. Chinese grocery - pretty well stocked. *Everyone* wearing masks and gloves.
3. International grocery - Fully stocked, including flour, produce, paper products, etc.

I was at the mothership Wegmans in Rochester on Sunday morning. It was pretty well stocked on everything except some meats, a few frozen things, some soup, Wegmans brand soda (?) and of course paper goods and wipes.

Precisely. There is no plan in the White House. They are flailing from sound bite solution (lie) to sound bite solution (lie) trying to find something that provides a stop to the immediate bleeding.

The health experts are not telling them what Trump wants to here, so the experts are being ignored per usual.

Just hope that the “solution” doesn’t next devolve to starting a war with someone (probably Iran) as a potential distraction, rallying point, and “reason” to force the workforce back on the job.

At this point, you’d have to be looking at keeping things shut down through at least late April. That would be enough time to see what impact they are having on case volume.

If we do indeed succeed in “flattening the curve” then after that the best move would be to look at a gradual phase in for the return of economic activity. For example, allow restaurants, bars and theaters to reopen, but they are only allowed to run at up to half capacity and must have ample space between customers. Additionally, some sporting events could resume, but with no audiences for the time being. Allow weddings and funerals again, but only up to a max of 30 people attending. Stuff like that.

Right now, I’m actually hoping for a spring blizzard and a cold snap.

Why?

Because it’d enforce separation and people wouldn’t go out as they would under normal circumstances.

This isn’t going to end in two weeks. Anyone saying this ends in 15 days is deluding themselves and their supporters. Declaring this over in 15 days?

It guarantees even wider spread.

Maybe the evangelicals are worried that if people stay home and read their Bibles more than usual they might discover it doesn’t say what they’ve been told it says.

It’s been a decade. Not 3 years.

The GOP has had 10 years to offer up anything resembling an alternative to ACA. They have nothing.

Let me restate this in plain English: THE GOP HAVE NO PLAN BEYOND OBAMACARE REPEAL.
They’ve had 10 years to come up with a plan. They don’t have one. Trump never had one. It was always vaporware. When the so-called policy wonk Ryan was Speaker, he claimed he had a plan, and yet never actually produced one while as speaker that did anything other than repeal Obamacare and replace it with vaporware.

There’s no plan beyond repealing what we have. That’s it. That’s their plan.

It’s the #GOPDontCare plan.

But I don’t understand what the end game is here. In the face of numbers that will continue to go up at the end of the ‘15 days,’ what do they do then?

Mandate everyone going back to work? Fine companies that don’t re-open? Arrest people who continue to isolate?

They’re tough talking, but I don’t see how they can follow through.

by then they’ll have a new narrative and 40% of the country will forget what it was like 15 days ago

Of course they don’t have a plan: the ACA was the Republican plan; M4A was the leftie Democratic style plan. Obama hijacked their plan and they are left with nothing. Romney could have run in 2012 by claiming credit for the ACA and saying that Obama had no original ideas and had to steal Romney’s ideas. But Romney didn’t because the GOP would have hammered him for adopting that position.

I weep in anger and frustration imagining what might have been if Hillary Clinton — a sane, sensible adult — had won. We couldn’t have avoided the coronavirus, but we could have ameliorated its effects. We could be South Korea (102 deaths) rather than Italy (4,825 deaths and counting).

There were many reasons Trump won. Ironically, one of the most oft-cited was the desire to blow everything up, because Trump voters were convinced that things couldn’t get any worse than they were in 2016. As they shelter in their homes and the economy grinds to a halt, I wonder if perhaps they now realize how good they had it under President Barack Obama?

Legally? There’s an argument that the Safer at Home/Shelter in Place orders fall under the traditional state police powers (health/welfare/morality), so the president telling people to go back to work probably won’t be worth much. Litigation would take a while, and who the fuck knows how any court would rule on a question like this.

From a more practical point of view: if there’s no aid to businesses and employees who have lost income/business during this down time, a lot of people aren’t going to have work to go back to. And those businesses that do open back up are going to have some issues. Getting employees back and supply chains running again is going to take a while. People may be less inclined to spend on “unnecessary” things which would hurt demand across multiple sectors of the economy, many of which are interconnected in ways most people don’t think about.

And that’s all before you get to the reckoning of employees asking “wait, we were running fine while we worked from home, why do we need to come into the office every day?”

And since a lot of the controls and bans are at the state level it would take the various governors to lift them, or attempt to use police powers in some way to force people back to work. So response would vary by state, and I expect the larger Blue States (CA, NY, etc.) will tell Trump to go fuck himself. And without those states things are not going to start back up that well even if there are other states that lift their bans.

I strongly suspect that’s why the Senate GOP bill only cuts a one-time check for $1,200 (if you “qualify”) versus suggestions of regular payments, the idea that slipping a few bucks in people’s pockets will mean that money will get blown rather than hoarded, providing a short “sugar high” to the economy without the worry that people will get used to receiving a check from the gov’t.

Now the Trumpists are touting some anti malarial drug as the panacea.

This reeks of phalanx.

It doesn’t stop the spread. It might not even be a good treatment option without double blind testing / controlled tests to determine whether it works.

At this point, I could say with equal conviction that drinking water saved these people.

re: #452 Hecuba’s daughter

According to worldometers.info, Italy is down to only 4,790 new cases today! Maybe their efforts to flatten the curve are working. The number has been dropping over the past couple days.

I posted something about that yesterday. If my calculations (and information) about when they started drastic quarantines are correct, they should be beginning to have an effect right about now.

(By the way, I posted above that shelter in place started on March 13 in the bay area: it was March 16.)

Funny, I’ve been hearing this in my head recently:

Thing to remember is that the June Rebellion of 1832 (the one in Les Mis) was a failure. Like the earlier (1819) Peterloo massacre in the UK, all it left behind were the bodies of proletariat dead. If revolution ever comes to America again, it will, I fear, make the la Terreur look bloodless.

re: #417 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

There is no way of telling how many people changed their minds about relocating to the UK in the first place. But there is this:

More than 10,000 EU nationals have left the NHS since the Brexit referendum, including almost 5,000 nurses. These new figures will add fuel to concerns about a wider staffing crisis.

Purely anecdotal, a friend who is an Emergency Department doctor in a small/fairly rural British hospital says they lost several staffers when Brexit became inevitable, and haven’t replaced all of them yet.
